Okay so Rhaura 2.0 is still leveling and I decided, against better judgement, to spec her Protection and do some tanking in dungeons. I might prefer healing these days, but let’s be honest – tanking is the quicker queues and therefore the quicker leveling.
Now, I haven’t tanked on my Paladin since before the big pre-Cataclysm patch, so I was feeling rather rusty and uncertain on some rotations. Not to mention I felt like I had very little health. (Seriously, some of my dps gear has more stamina than the tank gear at this point!)
My first dungeon I didn’t want to go alone, so a friendly Shaman from my guild tagged along as dps. A level 85 dps. So, yeah.. Aggro was a little bit of an issue, but for the most part it was okay.
My first dungeon turned out to be Blackrock Caverns, which I know fairly well so I know what to do and I felt fairly comfortable. The biggest problem we had actually was that the dps didn’t know what to do on the second boss and got mind controlled as well as letting the adds evolve. Both adds. So I was tanking the boss and three huge monsters (towards the end four!).
Thanks to a good healer and some cooldowns I survived and the boss went down.
After that the instance went smoothly with little to no issues.
When we’d finished I felt that tanking was kind of like riding a bike, so I queued alone for another one.
The queue popped almost immediately (as it’s wont to do for tanks) and I zoned into Stonecore in the middle of a fight with the flayers. I wasn’t quite prepared, I’d not yet buffed myself since I had been waiting so I could buff the party, but I did my best and managed to pick them all up.
That run was a bit of a mess to be honest, but not entirely due to me. I’m level 82 and there was a level 84 Ret Paladin in the group who had more health than me and he pulled aggro quite a few times.
We wiped once when the dps didn’t catch one of the sentries in the long hallway before Ozruk. One thing I miss about Paladins is the AoE taunt ability that Warriors and Druids have, other than that I really enjoy them. If everything goes according to plan you don’t need an AoE taunt, but it’s nice for those “Oh Shit!”-moments.
I can get some mobs by using the two taunts and flinging some spells around, but it’s difficult getting every single mob when there’s about 10 of them running around.
Anyway, after that we were doing fine again and managed to finish the instance without further deaths.
I’m still getting used to a few things that have changed with Paladin tanks since I last played one. Consecration for example. I’m used to using it on every pack, now I have to remember to save it for the bigger ones since it has a longer cooldown.
Keeping track of Holy Power and when to use it is a change as well. Other than that it feels fairly similar to how it used to be, so I suspect I’ll be fine.
It’s easy to say now though, when all I’m doing is normal. I suspect it won’t be quite as easy once I get into Heroics at 85.
